Celebrating Young Storytellers of Glengarry: A New Generation Honours the Past

There’s something quietly powerful about seeing young people dig into the roots of their community and bring those stories to life. On June 4th, inside the historic walls of the Glengarry Archives, five local students were celebrated not just for their writing—but for giving voice to Glengarry’s past in a way that feels alive, personal, and full of promise.

Hosted by the Glengarry Historical Society, this year’s Writing & Bursary Awards honoured graduating students from Char-Lan, Glengarry District, Le Relais, and Holy Trinity. Each winner offered their own perspective on the contest theme, “A Window on Glengarry’s Past,” exploring family histories, forgotten landmarks, or defining local moments that deserve to be remembered.

The recipients—Sadie McRae, Megan Menard, Kaylee Massia, Lauren MacDonell, and Mia Montpetit—stood proudly with their families, educators, and members of the GHS board as they accepted their awards. Beyond the bursaries and certificates, it was clear that something more meaningful had been passed on: a sense of place, a connection to where they’re from, and an understanding that their stories matter.

This is only the second year of the contest, but it already feels like a tradition worth preserving. Plans are underway for the 2026 edition, and if this year’s entries are any indication, Glengarry’s future will be shaped by young minds who know how to listen to the land—and to the voices that came before them.
